Lore & history

Among the nobility of the Necron dynasties and their undying Lychguard bodyguards, close-quarters combat is governed by ancient codes of honour that predate the War in Heaven. A Necron Overlord, Phaeron or Vargard does not deign to brawl with crude chains or chemical explosives; he strides into the fray bearing a Warscythe or a Hyperphase Sword whose emerald-glowing blade phases across dimensional boundaries as it swings. To the horror of Space Marine Captains, Aeldari Autarchs and Imperial Knights who attempt to parry a Warscythe with an iron shield or even a crackling Storm Shield, the Necron blade frequently passes straight through the defensive barrier as if it were smoke before solidifying inside the victim's chest.

Forged from living metal—necrodermis—and wired with hyper-dimensional phase-shifters, the Warscythe is the traditional badge of high command across the Infinite Empire and the standard two-handed polearm of Lychguard phalanxes tasked with decapitating enemy warlords and hacking apart armoured walkers.

Among the madness-afflicted Skorpekh Cults, this same dimensional-blade science is pushed to an even more savage extreme in the form of massive Hyperphase Threshers and Reap-Blades grafted directly onto the Destroyers' multi-limbed frames.

Design, mechanism & battlefield effect

Inside the haft of a Warscythe or the hilt of a Hyperphase Sword sits a sub-atomic phase-oscillator synchronized with the weapon's emerald necrodermis blade. As the blade arcs toward a target, it vibrates millions of times per second between realspace and an adjacent dimensional pocket.

Because its molecular structure is partially out of phase with normal matter until the microsecond the weapon's sensor-matrix detects the core of its target, the blade ignores the density of ceramite, adamantium and even refractive energy shields, severing tank barrels and Terminator plate with effortless, surgical silence.

Patterns, variants & doctrine

The Warscythe is a heavy, two-handed polearm carried by Overlords and Lychguard, while the one-handed Hyperphase Sword is paired with a Dispersion Shield by Lychguard phalanxes. Skorpekh Destroyers wield twin Hyperphase Threshers or massive two-handed Hyperphase Reap-Blades, while Overlords of the Mephrit and Novokh dynasties often carry Blood Scythes or Voidscythes capable of felling an Imperial Knight in a single sweep.

Across ten millennia of total war, the Warscythe & Hyperphase Sword (Melee Weapon) has spawned numerous classified sub-patterns and field modifications. While standard production runs prioritize logistical interchangeability across warzones, elite formations covet pre-Heresy or master-artificer marks featuring hand-lapped containment assemblies, psycho-conductive firing relays, and over-pressured propellant or energy cells. Captured examples modified by Hereteks, Ordo Xenos Deathwatch armourers, or Freebooter Mekboyz frequently bypass factory safety governors entirely, turning every activation into a calculated gamble between devastating lethality and catastrophic overload.

Forge World Variations, Internal Mechanics & Artificer Visuals

Within the sealed armouries and forge-fanes that sustain Necrons war-hosts, the Warscythe & Hyperphase Sword is produced and maintained across a spectrum of fiercely guarded sub-patterns, including Overlord's Warscythe & Voidscythe, Hyperphase Sword & Dispersion Shield, Hyperphase Reap-Blade & Threshers. Unlike crude mass-produced armaments, every authentic example requires precise metallurgical and energetic calibration: from the high-density alloys and psycho-conductive matrices of its core housing to the volatile propellant, capacitor, or bio-symbiotic feed assemblies that power its lethality. Lychguard armed with Hyperphase Swords pair them with Dispersion Shields whose force-fields can angle incoming laser and bolt fire directly back into the faces of the enemy. Veteran armourers, Tech-Priests, Crypteks, Bonesingers, or Mekboyz obsessively tune the internal tolerances before each campaign, balancing cyclic output and thermal dissipation against the ever-present hazard of catastrophic overload during multi-week sieges.

Among Warhammer 40,000 illustrators, Golden Demon miniature painters, and diorama builders, the Warscythe & Hyperphase Sword is celebrated as one of the setting's most visually expressive focal points for weathering, contrast, and Object Source Lighting (OSL). Community artists emphasize the stark interplay between battle-chipped outer casings—scarred by sponge-applied metallic scratches, mud spatter, and sub-faction heraldry—and the intense chromatic focal glow of its active elements, whether rendered through violet-to-amber muzzle heat-bloom, crackling non-metallic-metal (NMM) power fields, incandescent plasma/gauss coils, or glossy multi-layered gore across serrated teeth. This devotion to micro-detail transforms every depiction of the Warscythe & Hyperphase Sword into a miniature narrative of ten thousand years of total war.

Notable patterns & relic examples
