Before the fires of biotransference consumed the Necrontyr race, the warriors who would become the Immortals were the career soldiers, veteran spearmen and royal regulars who had survived the bitter wars of the Secession and the opening campaigns against the Old Ones. As reward for their service, they were marched into the bio-furnaces ahead of the common citizenry and gifted bodies far sturdier, broader and better cognitive-linked than the mindless Necron Warriors who make up the bulk of the silver tide.
While an ordinary Necron Warrior is a lobotomised automaton incapable of speech or initiative, an Immortal retains the cold muscle-memory, tactical reflexes and martial discipline of its mortal life — though stripped of emotion, fatigue, mercy or fear. They can speak in harsh, metallic monotone to deliver status reports or relay an Overlord's orders, and they instinctively adjust their firing lanes, take up interlocking fields of fire and advance in unbreakable lockstep without requiring constant micro-management from a noble's command protocols.
Across sixty million years of war and stasis, the Immortals have served as the iron fist of every Tomb World's awakening. Where the Warriors are the expendable anvil, the Immortals are the veteran spearhead sent to crush the hardest points of the enemy line. Even when an entire phalanx is cut down by concentrated artillery, their reinforced reanimation protocols pull shattered necrodermis plates back together until the silver ranks rise once more.
Appearance & wargear
Broader-shouldered and more heavily plated than standard Necron Warriors, Immortals are encased in thick, overlapping slabs of living-metal necrodermis emblazoned with the golden, jade or bronze ankh-glyphs of their ruling dynasty, their backs reinforced by heavy spinal power-cables that feed directly into their weapons. Their deathless skull-visages burn with cold emerald or dynasty-tinted ocular light, and their chests house reinforced self-repair nodes that knit shattered limbs and cracked ribcages back together on the march. Each phalanx carries either the heavy twin-rod Gauss Blaster — capable of stripping a battle tank or Space Marine down to stray atoms layer by layer — or the Tesla Carbine, which unleashes forked arcs of living lightning that leap from one victim to the next across a crowded trench.

Battlefield role & tactics
Advancing in disciplined ten-strong phalanxes or stepping straight through the glowing eternity gate of a Night Scythe or Monolith, Immortals form the elite heavy line infantry of the Necron legions. Impervious to small arms that would fell mortal soldiers and tirelessly reanimating when struck down, they pour relentless, walking volleys of Gauss or Tesla fire into the enemy front while closing the distance to finish survivors with the heavy bladed bayonets of their rifles.
Field Modifications, Sub-Faction Doctrines & Operational Idiosyncrasies
Within the strategic threat-indices of the Departmento Munitorum, the Ordo Xenos, and the high command savants of Necrons, Immortals are classified as a premier troops asset whose battlefield effectiveness stems from the tight integration of operator conditioning and specialized wargear. Bound by sixty-million-year-old command engrams and interstitial repair scarabs, Necron phalanxes and Canoptek constructs march in silent, soulless unison while self-healing necrodermis reknits shattered limbs and phases wounded hulls back to tomb-world repair crypts. In active campaign theatres, Broader-shouldered and more heavily plated than standard Necron Warriors, Immortals are encased in thick, overlapping slabs of living-metal necrodermis emblazoned with the golden, jade or bronze ankh-glyphs of their ruling dynasty, their backs reinforced by heavy spinal power-cables that feed directly into their weapons. Their deathless skull-visages burn with cold emerald or dynasty-tinted ocular light, and their chests house reinforced self-repair nodes that knit shattered limbs and cracked ribcages back together on the march.
Veteran formations of Immortals develop distinct sub-faction doctrines and field modifications over decades of continuous deployment. Unlike mute Necron Warriors, Immortals retain the ability to speak in a flat, mechanical monotone and execute complex battlefield manoeuvres without constant noble direction. Whether fighting in void-ship boarding actions, ash-waste tank duels, or ruined hive-city basilicas, experienced crews and squad leaders strip away parade-ground redundancies to maximize ammunition feed reliability, target-acquisition speed, and close-quarters survivability under extreme suppression.
Field maintenance and biological or machine-spirit recovery logs confirm that sustained combat exacts a heavy toll on both wargear and flesh, yet Immortals maintain operational cohesion long after standard line units would collapse. Following every major engagement, recovery teams prioritize the immediate extraction of their core panoply, veterancy honors, and consecrated components so that the lineage and lethal institutional memory of the formation endure into the next warzone.
Heraldry, Battle-Damage & Community Artistry
Across the Warhammer 40,000 illustration, Golden Demon painting, and display-diorama community, Immortals stand out as one of the most rewarding subjects in the Necrons range. Artists and miniature painters focus intently on their signature visual hallmarks: burnished Sautekh silver, Szarekhan bronze, or Nihilakh turquoise-and-gold necrodermis, contrasted against intense, radioactive tesseract-green OSL glowing from ribcage apertures, eye-nodes, and gauss rods. Combined with the distinct silhouette described in field sightings—Broader-shouldered and more heavily plated than standard Necron Warriors, Immortals are encased in thick, overlapping slabs of living-metal necrodermis emblazoned with the golden, jade or bronze ankh-glyphs of their ruling dynasty, their backs reinforced by heavy spinal power-cables that feed directly into their weapons—every model and canvas painting offers a rich interplay of texture between rigid armour plates, weathered cloth or chitin, and gleaming weapon assemblies.
When depicting Immortals at the height of battle, community artists and painters push contrast through sponge-chipped battle damage, directional mud and ash pigments across the lower greaves or hull tracks, and vivid Object Source Lighting (OSL) cast by active lenses, energy coils, or muzzle flashes. Sub-faction heraldry, campaign badges, and trophy details allow hobbyists to anchor each miniature or illustration in a specific canonical warzone—celebrating both the grimdark complexity of the Forty-First Millennium and the craftsmanship of the community that brings Necrons to life.
