Among the Leagues of Votann, any blank patch upon a star chart is an irresistible challenge and a potential hazard that cannot go unexamined. The Hernkyn are the rugged survivalists, prospectors and far-ranging scouts who answer that call, leaving the warmth of their Kindreds and Holds behind for solar decades at a time to range into the dark void beyond established trade routes. While other galactic civilisations often treat such rootless wanderers as outcasts or rebels, Kin society reveres the Hernkyn as heroes making a profound personal sacrifice.
For a family-focused clone species whose deepest spiritual duty is to return their lived experiences to their Ancestor Core upon death, venturing so far from League space carries the terrifying risk of dying unrecovered in the void — though bands operating far from home carry portable Legacy Vaults to temporarily upload the minds of dying comrades until their data can be brought back to the Votann. In return for that risk, the Hernkyn bring back priceless riches of memory, chart safe void-channels, identify new trading partners, warn their Holds of approaching Ork Waaagh!s or Drukhari Webway spurs, and plant multispectral claim-beacons on mineral-rich worlds to summon the Cthonian Mining Guilds.
When an Oathband marches to war, these veteran frontiersmen ride at the vanguard as Hernkyn Pioneers, astride hovering Magna-Coil Grav Bikes that combine the mobility of light cavalry with the firepower of an armoured gunboat.
Appearance & wargear
Wearing lighter, weather-beaten frontier coats over enviro-hardened Void Armour so they can live in the saddle for months across baking deserts or carnivorous jungles, Hernkyn Pioneers ride three-point anti-gravitic Magna-Coil Grav Bikes whose humming lifter pads skim effortlessly over boulders, mire and craters. Each bike mounts twin hull-fitted Magna-Coil Autocannons and reinforced rollbars topped with a Rollbar Searchlight, a Multiwave Comms Array or a Pan Spectral Scanner, while every third bike in a squadron carries a rear-facing gunner manning a HYLas Rotary Cannon or a searing Ion Beamer. The riders themselves carry Bolt Revolvers, Bolt Shotguns and Gravitic Concussion Grenades.
