1 / 4 · Click to enlargeOverview
Ûthar the Destined is a kâhl, a war leader, of the Greater Thurian League. He wields the Blade of the Ancestors. It is said that his greatest deeds still lie ahead.
His Blade of the Ancestors is a magnificent plasma sword with a glowing edge. Few can assess a foe as swiftly or mercilessly as he does. His uncanny good fortune has helped him survive countless battles, and many Kin believe the Ancestors themselves watch over him. Ûthar is a kâhl of the Greater Thurian League from the Kindred of Vôrtun on the Hold World of Obsyd Gate. He was born from the cloning crucibles on a day of strange omens. The Votann produced a prophecy, and the hold's Forge created a magnificent plasma blade without any Brôkhyr's command. By the end of his first day the Grimnyr had named him the Destined and given him the Blade of the Ancestors. He has spent his life trying to live up to it.
Origins
He was born to the Kindred of Vôrtun on Obsyd Gate on a day of omens.
On the day of his birth, the Votann of his hold issued a spontaneous prophecy in ancient datascript, implying that one of the newly cloned would be meant for a great task. The forge produced a magnificent plasma blade without command, and the Grimnyr followed clues to his crucible. By the end of his first day he was proclaimed the Destined and given the blade.
Key events
- Won the Deadstar Campaign.
- Slew Gorbrak the Iron Beast.
- Fought at the Battle of Örgvayr after the Great Rift.
- Led a counteroffensive at Törg.
- Defeated Chaos Lord Hakatar of the World Eaters on the bridge over the Chasm of Embers.
- Ordered a full retreat from Törg once everything of value had been recovered.
The 10th-edition codex (p. 51) says his patience with unanswered questions eventually ran out. He decided he had been made to seize his fate, not wait for it, and left the Vôrtun Kindred's territory to find it. He has served repeatedly as High Kâhl on Vôrtun's Votannic Council and led Kin armies across other Leagues. On his wanderings his following has grown rather than shrunk. Whole Oathbands, and even entire Kindreds, have uprooted themselves to follow him and settle new regions they hope are part of the Ancestors' plan. His retinue is said to include Kin from more than a dozen Leagues, many of them fanatically loyal.
The same codex records harder decisions. When an Imperial freighter convoy carrying a self-replicating technovirus approached Kin space, Ûthar destroyed its escorts and drove the defenceless freighters off into wilderness space so the blight could not reach the Leagues. He is also credited with the Dreadstar Campaign. Some attribute his remarkable luck to the Ancestors, others to an obscure, specialised Cloneskein. Either way, it has kept him alive through victories that would have killed lesser Kâhls.
Battles & campaigns
- The Deadstar Campaign: His victory.
- Gorbrak the Iron Beast: He slew the Ork.
- The wars around Warp Storm Örgvayr: Fought by the Greater Thurian League.
Personality
Ûthar is pragmatic, decisive and coldly calculating. He measures his enemies quickly and does not waste lives.
He has striven to live up to his destiny ever since, enduring hardships that would break most Kin. Some attribute his luck to the Ancestors and others to an obscure cloneskein he possesses. He is pragmatic and calculating, unwilling to waste lives, and focused on results.
Codex: Leagues of Votann (9th edition, p. 28) describes a contradiction at the heart of Ûthar. He is ruthless to the point of cruelty, yet among his Kin he shows a gallows humour and a plain, down-to-earth manner that masks his colder side. That manner also hides a doubt that has troubled him since childhood. He wonders whether the prophecy at his birth was ever read correctly, and whether he will be ready when his great task arrives. His comrades excuse his harshness as the pressure of a destiny that has not yet revealed itself. Some other Kindreds are less forgiving and simply call him cruel.

Legacy
Ûthar is the most famous Kâhl of the Leagues of Votann, a commander whose deeds have made him a living legend among the Kin. His pragmatism shows how the Leagues fight: decisively, profitably and without needless losses, withdrawing the moment a war stops paying its way. As the Votann push into a galaxy split by the Great Rift, he is the first of their heroes that many Imperial and xenos commanders have learned to fear. Ûthar is the Kin's chosen one, a hero still writing his legend.
