Lore & origins

The Leagues of Votann guard their Ancestor Cores with nothing less than the best weapons and armour they can make, and the warriors who carry them carry a name every Kin respects: the Einhyr Hearthguard. They are picked from the most accomplished fighters of a hold, including Hearthkyn and theyns. Each has proven themselves over many years of front-line combat and risen purely by deed, as the Leagues' staunch meritocracy demands. Nobody is born into the Einhyr. A Kin earns the place.

Theyns who truly excel at war may join the Einhyr or rise to become kâhls. One path does not rule out the other, and some Kin have belonged to both elite circles at once. In practice the kâhls usually stand apart as war leaders and generals, while the Einhyr serve as elite strike troops, bodyguards and voidship boarding parties. They are typically organised into Hearthbands and deployed only when a vital asset must be taken quickly. Whether shielding an Oathband's commanders, striking deep into enemy territory or storming an enemy vessel, they are said to be unstoppable on the attack and immovable in defence.

Hearthkyn are already famously dependable. The Einhyr take that durability much further with experience, technology and a wide range of mechanical, biological and neurochemical augmentations. A crack Einhyr unit can be trusted to hold the line and to steady their fellows even in the face of untold horrors. The most exceptional rise again to become Einhyr Champions, noble warriors who may be chosen by kâhls and Hearthspakes to lead vital missions or to guard a Votannic Council. Many Champions go on to become kâhls themselves.

Appearance & wargear

Einhyr wear exo-armour: inch-thick, ultra-dense plates on a complex servo-assisted frame. It lets them shrug off hits even from anti-tank weapons while keeping full freedom of movement, and it can auto-stabilise their aim as they return fire. Tactical displays and counteragent AI systems enhance the wearer's HunTR interface. Each squad is led by a veteran hesyr, marked out by a weavefield crest or teleport crest on the armour and slightly different wargear from the rest.

Battlefield role & tactics

Einhyr advance behind a curtain of fire from EtaCarn plasma guns or volkanite disintegrators and shoulder-mounted exo-armour grenade launchers. In melee they strike with concussion gauntlets, ancient devices that increase the mass of a fist mid-swing and turn a burly uppercut into a blow that can lift a hulking Ork off its feet. Those who prefer finesse wear a thrumming plasma blade gauntlet instead, and a hesyr may carry a concussion hammer. Squads number four to nine Einhyr plus their hesyr.

Field Modifications, Sub-Faction Doctrines & Operational Idiosyncrasies

Within the strategic threat-indices of the Departmento Munitorum, the Ordo Xenos, and the high command savants of Leagues of Votann, Einhyr Hearthguard are classified as a premier elites asset whose battlefield effectiveness stems from the tight integration of operator conditioning and specialized wargear. Cloned from hardy ancestral Crucibles and counselled by the ancient gestalt machine-minds of the Votann, Kin Oathbands prosecute war as a calculated resource-and-cost equation, locking void-armoured phalanxes behind Mor'tonium ion fields and Eye of the Ancestors judgement tokens. In active campaign theatres, Einhyr wear exo-armour: inch-thick, ultra-dense plates on a complex servo-assisted frame. It lets them shrug off hits even from anti-tank weapons while keeping full freedom of movement, and it can auto-stabilise their aim as they return fire.

Veteran formations of Einhyr Hearthguard develop distinct sub-faction doctrines and field modifications over decades of continuous deployment. The exo-armour's ultra-dense plates on a servo-assisted frame let an Einhyr shrug off anti-tank fire with full freedom of movement. The suit also auto-stabilises its wearer's aim. Whether fighting in void-ship boarding actions, ash-waste tank duels, or ruined hive-city basilicas, experienced crews and squad leaders strip away parade-ground redundancies to maximize ammunition feed reliability, target-acquisition speed, and close-quarters survivability under extreme suppression.

Field maintenance and biological or machine-spirit recovery logs confirm that sustained combat exacts a heavy toll on both wargear and flesh, yet Einhyr Hearthguard maintain operational cohesion long after standard line units would collapse. Following every major engagement, recovery teams prioritize the immediate extraction of their core panoply, veterancy honors, and consecrated components so that the lineage and lethal institutional memory of the formation endure into the next warzone.

Heraldry, Battle-Damage & Community Artistry

Across the Warhammer 40,000 illustration, Golden Demon painting, and display-diorama community, Einhyr Hearthguard stand out as one of the most rewarding subjects in the Leagues of Votann range. Artists and miniature painters focus intently on their signature visual hallmarks: rugged void-hardened panoply in Greater Thurian League teal-and-white or Ymyr Conglomerate crimson, warm glowing orange plasma/ion visors, and weathered exo-frame hazard markings. Combined with the distinct silhouette described in field sightings—Einhyr wear exo-armour: inch-thick, ultra-dense plates on a complex servo-assisted frame—every model and canvas painting offers a rich interplay of texture between rigid armour plates, weathered cloth or chitin, and gleaming weapon assemblies.

When depicting Einhyr Hearthguard at the height of battle, community artists and painters push contrast through sponge-chipped battle damage, directional mud and ash pigments across the lower greaves or hull tracks, and vivid Object Source Lighting (OSL) cast by active lenses, energy coils, or muzzle flashes. Sub-faction heraldry, campaign badges, and trophy details allow hobbyists to anchor each miniature or illustration in a specific canonical warzone—celebrating both the grimdark complexity of the Forty-First Millennium and the craftsmanship of the community that brings Leagues of Votann to life.
