Forged on the volcanic death-world of Nocturne and its oversized moon Prometheus, the XVIII Legion is simultaneously the most humane and the most apocalyptic of the Astartes. Before Vulkan was found, the Terran XVIII ('The Dragon Warriors') won eternal fame at the 'Assault on the Tempest Galleries' beneath the Caucasus Wastes on Terra, where twenty thousand Legionaries marched into subterranean magma-tubes held by Ethnarchic gene-monstrosities and destroyed the generators at the cost of nineteen thousand dead.

Because interaction between the XVIII Legion's unique gene-seed and Nocturne's high-background radiation turns every Salamander's skin pitch-black and their eyes glowing ember-red (giving them natural thermal vision called 'Fire-Sight'), they remain deeply integrated with their mortal families, serving as village clan-leaders between deployments while adhering to the 'Promethean Cult' of self-sacrifice, hammer-craft, and endurance.
