Over millions of years (accelerated violently by the ancient War in Heaven between the Old Ones and the Necrontyr, and later by the Fall of the Aeldari in M30), these vortexes achieved self-sustaining malevolent sentience as the Four Ruinous Powers: Khorne, Tzeentch, Nurgle, and Slaanesh.
