1 / 4 · Click to enlargeLore & history
To an Adeptus Mechanicus Tech-Priest or an Aeldari Bonesinger, the weapons carried by a mob of charging Ork Boyz look like an insult to the very laws of metallurgy and ballistics. A Choppa is often little more than a jagged, three-foot slab of salvaged tank hull riveted to an iron pipe, sometimes upgraded with a sputtering, unshielded chainsaw motor that spews oily black smoke. Its companion in the Ork's other fist, the Slugga, is a blocky, oversized revolver or magazine-fed pistol hammered together from scrap steel that fires thumb-thick, flat-nosed bullets with a deafening roar.
Yet when thirty roaring Greenskins crash into an Imperial trench line, those crude weapons cleave through flak armour, carapace plate and even Space Marine ceramite with terrifying ease. Backed by the monstrous bone-crushing strength of an Ork's dense musculature—and subtly greased by the collective psychic field of the Waaagh!, which ensures that a Slugga fires as long as its owner firmly believes it ought to—the pairing of Choppa and Slugga has drowned whole sectors in blood.
Design, mechanism & battlefield effect
A standard Choppa relies on raw mass, a wickedly heavy forward balance, and the tremendous upper-body power of an Ork Boy. Chain-Choppas add a loop of jagged iron teeth driven by a two-stroke promethium engine or squig-oil motor. A Big Choppa—carried by Ork Nobz and Warbosses—scales this formula up into a two-handed battleaxe or greatsword heavy enough to shear the tracks off a Chimera.
A Slugga operates on the simplest possible blowback or revolving cylinder mechanism, firing heavy-calibre, crudely jacketed solid slugs propelled by volatile propellant mixes that produce a foot-long muzzle flash and a thunderous report—for to an Ork, a gun that isn't deafeningly loud simply isn't working properly.
Patterns, variants & doctrine
Every Ork clan and sub-cult customizes its blades and pistols: Blood Axe Kommandos carry serrated throat-slitting twin combat knives ( like Boss Snikrot's pair, Mork's Teeth), Beast Snagga Boyz wield bone-and-chain Beastchoppas designed to carve into monstrous squiggoths and enemy tanks, and Nobz heft roaring, engine-driven Big Choppas and Uge Choppas.
Across ten millennia of total war, the Choppa, Big Choppa & Slugga (Melee Weapon) has spawned numerous classified sub-patterns and field modifications. While standard production runs prioritize logistical interchangeability across warzones, elite formations covet pre-Heresy or master-artificer marks featuring hand-lapped containment assemblies, psycho-conductive firing relays, and over-pressured propellant or energy cells. Captured examples modified by Hereteks, Ordo Xenos Deathwatch armourers, or Freebooter Mekboyz frequently bypass factory safety governors entirely, turning every activation into a calculated gamble between devastating lethality and catastrophic overload.
Forge World Variations, Internal Mechanics & Artificer Visuals
Within the sealed armouries and forge-fanes that sustain Orks war-hosts, the Choppa, Big Choppa & Slugga is produced and maintained across a spectrum of fiercely guarded sub-patterns, including Mork's Teeth, Big Choppa & 'Uge Choppa, Chain-Choppa. Unlike crude mass-produced armaments, every authentic example requires precise metallurgical and energetic calibration: from the high-density alloys and psycho-conductive matrices of its core housing to the volatile propellant, capacitor, or bio-symbiotic feed assemblies that power its lethality. Imperial tech-adepts who disassemble captured Ork Sluggas frequently discover that the firing pins, springs or chambers are misaligned or missing entirely—yet the guns functioned reliably in greenskin hands. Veteran armourers, Tech-Priests, Crypteks, Bonesingers, or Mekboyz obsessively tune the internal tolerances before each campaign, balancing cyclic output and thermal dissipation against the ever-present hazard of catastrophic overload during multi-week sieges.
Among Warhammer 40,000 illustrators, Golden Demon miniature painters, and diorama builders, the Choppa, Big Choppa & Slugga is celebrated as one of the setting's most visually expressive focal points for weathering, contrast, and Object Source Lighting (OSL). Community artists emphasize the stark interplay between battle-chipped outer casings—scarred by sponge-applied metallic scratches, mud spatter, and sub-faction heraldry—and the intense chromatic focal glow of its active elements, whether rendered through violet-to-amber muzzle heat-bloom, crackling non-metallic-metal (NMM) power fields, incandescent plasma/gauss coils, or glossy multi-layered gore across serrated teeth. This devotion to micro-detail transforms every depiction of the Choppa, Big Choppa & Slugga into a miniature narrative of ten thousand years of total war.
