The Biovore is the Tyranid swarm's living artillery. It is a sluggish, bloated bioform whose only purpose is to grow spore mines and hurl them at the enemy. Deep within its squat, lumpen body it nurtures a clutch of these living bombs. When it fires, bony protrusions on its forelimbs anchor it to the ground and a powerful, shuddering muscle spasm flings a mine out through a dorsal aperture. In flight, the mine's internal gas bladder inflates and it drifts slowly down towards the ground. A miss is no relief to the target. Spore mines have a rudimentary animal intelligence and do not burst on impact but when they sense a non-Tyranid lifeform nearby, so the barrage lingers as a drifting minefield that clouds the field and coats the enemy in acid, poison and shards of chitin.
Biovores are fairly rare in the swarms, and many take this to mean the Hive Mind prefers to win its wars in bloody melee. The truth is subtler. As the hive fleets pushed deeper into the galaxy, their victories grew harder, because their enemies learned to destroy the swarm at long range. The pragmatic Hive Mind answered with a bioform able to neutralise that long-range weaponry, and the Biovore was born. When it wishes to deny an area to the foe, it sends hosts of Biovores to seed the zone with dozens of mines, creating a deadly, impassable hazard.
Imperial savants believe the Hive Mind may have used Orkoid genetic material to create the Biovore. That makes it not only a dangerous weapon but living proof of how readily the Tyranids absorb and repurpose what they consume. By the Fourth Tyrannic War, Hive Fleet Leviathan had refined the design again, applying the lessons of countless earlier battles.
Appearance & wargear
The Biovore is a squat, lumpen beast that Ordo Xenos records put at around two metres tall and two tonnes in weight; its newer, wider form serves as a stable firing platform. The Leviathan-era form digs chitin-barbed legs deep into the ground to absorb the recoil. Its spore mines are tentacled, floating orbs that drift towards prey like malicious alien balloons before bursting in a shower of bone shards, toxic gas and corrosive fluid.

Battlefield role & tactics
Biovores are indirect fire support, lobbing fragmentation, bio-acid or poison spore mines over terrain onto entrenched enemies and gun lines, or saturating ground the Hive Mind wants closed off. Because the mines hang in the air and hunt nearby life, a Biovore barrage both strikes the target and leaves a hazard for anyone trying to advance or flee through the area. Imperial soldiers have given the beast the blunt name "Gunbeast".

Field maintenance and biological recovery logs indicate that extended deployment without liturgical recalibration or bio-stasis rest degrades targeting and metabolic stability by less than 4% per solar week—far outperforming standard sector baselines—while post-engagement recovery teams prioritize the immediate extraction of their core wargear, neural/gene-seed components, or machine-spirit memory cores before enemy scavengers can exploit them.
Notable battles & users
- Ichar IV: recorded by the Ordo Xenos as the world where Biovores were first encountered.
- Vivaporius: Biovores there evolved to retch balls of hardening slime to fuse a Warlord Titan's limbs so it could be taken alive.
- The Pyrovore: the Biovore's fellow 'living artillery' bioform, which spews flame instead of mines.
- Threat grade: the Ordo Xenos lists the Biovore's threat as 'Low', a rating its victims might dispute.
