Lore & origins

Lictors are the lone hunters of the Tyranid swarm. They range ahead of the hive fleet, seek out prey, and lead the Hive Mind to concentrations of enemies, including those trying to hide or flee before the swarm arrives. Unlike most Tyranids, they are not instinctively aggressive. They are opportunistic, patient predators that stalk their prey from the shadows, avoid fights where they would be outmatched, and pick off victims in ones and twos when they are cut off from help. A Lictor can wait motionless for days, unnoticed, until the right moment comes. It is said to be the only Tyranid that stalks its prey before killing it. As scouts, Lictors can work outside the synaptic web and do not need a synapse creature nearby.

As it hunts, a Lictor gives off a pheromone trail that draws other Tyranids to the area. The more prey it finds, the stronger the response. Killing a Lictor is therefore no guarantee of safety, because the swarm may already be on its way. When it strikes, it does so with brutal efficiency. Its feeder tendrils are tipped with sharpened bony plates that can pierce a skull. It uses them to lobotomise a victim and devour the brain and spinal fluid, absorbing memories in a biochemical process. In death, the enemy reveals more than it ever would in life: where its comrades are and what weaknesses can be exploited. One bloody meal can teach a Lictor more than hours of interrogation.

Its reputation among its foes is almost mythical: a ghost-like horror that kills a handful of soldiers and then vanishes, sometimes before their eyes, leaving no trail. Lictors are usually brought down only by quick-thinking heavy weapons teams or heroes such as well-armed Space Marines. Many Imperial Guard commanders prefer "reconnaissance by fire". At the first hint of a Lictor they seal off an area, sometimes kilometres across, and carpet-bomb it to ash. This rarely works, but it lifts the defenders' morale, at least until the Lictor strikes again.

Appearance & wargear

A Lictor stands as tall as a Tyranid Warrior and far taller than a Space Marine. Imperial records give an average height of 2.4 metres and a weight of about a tonne. A pair of long, mantis-like claws rises over its shoulders for climbing and impaling, and long feeder tendrils droop from its maw, sharpening its senses. Its whole body is adapted for concealment: chameleonic microscales that shift colour to match the background, pheromones that mask its scent, deformable organ clusters that let it mimic rocks or plants, hoof-hair that absorbs vibration so it moves almost silently, body-heat dampeners, and even a brain casing that hides its brainwaves. A bladder of super-nutritious fluid lets it go without feeding for long periods.

Battlefield role & tactics

In battle Lictors appear without warning wherever the enemy is weakest. They use mantis claws, steel-piercing talons and barbed flesh hooks to drag key targets out of position and kill them before anyone can react, while their pheromone trail guides the swarm onto the enemy. Their real value is often in the hunt before the battle, spreading terror and feeding intelligence to the Hive Mind.

Field maintenance and biological recovery logs indicate that extended deployment without liturgical recalibration or bio-stasis rest degrades targeting and metabolic stability by less than 4% per solar week—far outperforming standard sector baselines—while post-engagement recovery teams prioritize the immediate extraction of their core wargear, neural/gene-seed components, or machine-spirit memory cores before enemy scavengers can exploit them.
