1 / 4 · Click to enlargeOverview
Rogal Dorn's First Captain and the Emperor's Champion during the Siege of Terra, who later founded the zealous Black Templars Chapter.
He fought with the Black Sword, a blade he carried through the Siege. As Emperor's Champion he faced many of the traitors' champions, including his former friend Khârn of the World Eaters. After the Heresy, he led his Templars on a crusade to hunt down the traitors. Sigismund was First Captain of the Imperial Fists' Templars, the first Emperor's Champion and the founding High Marshal of the Black Templars. Beneath the primarchs, few warriors in Imperial history could match him. He kept his oaths with chains, binding his weapons to his wrists with dense black links. The Black Templars still wear Devotion Chains in his memory, along with black and white heraldry based on his own.
Origins
Recruited by the Imperial Fists from Terra, he rose to become one of Dorn's greatest swordsmen.
On Terra, he was recruited into the Imperial Fists and quickly distinguished himself in combat. He served alongside the World Eaters during the Great Crusade, where he befriended Khârn in the gladiatorial pits. His skill and loyalty earned him the post of First Captain.
His friendship with the World Eaters left a lasting mark. Late in the Great Crusade, the Imperial Fists served alongside the XII Legion for a long period. In the fighting pits of the Conqueror, Sigismund made a name for himself as 'the Black Knight', and he and Khârn called each other oath-brothers. Binding weapons to the wrist with chains began as a World Eaters custom. Sigismund adopted it eagerly, chaining his blades with heavy black links, and the Black Templars still wear Devotion Chains in his memory. Sanguinius said that he seemed less Dorn's champion than Death's. The background adds that he was never beaten in a duel except once, through treachery, when Jago Sevatarion headbutted him.
Key events
- Rose to become the Imperial Fists' First Captain and Emperor's Champion during the Heresy, Rogal Dorn's most trusted swordsman.
- Fought Kharn during the Siege of Terra; in their first encounter Kharn overwhelmed him and Dorn intervened.
- Defeated and killed Kharn in a later duel (depicted in the novel Warhawk).
- Founded the Black Templars after the Codex reorganisation, pursuing an endless crusade.
- Died fighting Abaddon at the First Battle of Cadia, after wounding him with the Black Sword.
Euphrati Keeler changed the course of his war. Dorn had given him command of the Retribution Fleet, thirty thousand Imperial Fists and over five hundred warships bound for Isstvan. After hearing Keeler's vision, he asked to stay at his Primarch's side, and command passed to Captain Yonnad. When he explained his reasons, Dorn rebuked him: Primarchs and their sons existed only to serve, and their fates were not theirs to choose. During the Schism of Mars, Malcador asked Dorn to secure the forges. Sigismund led four companies to Mondus Occulum, where Fabricator Locum Kane was still loyal, and loaded nearly 12,000 suits of Mark IV armour and twice as many weapons. Then a Traitor army with almost sixty Titans closed in. His orders did not allow a hopeless last stand, and within hours Mondus Occulum and Mondus Gamma were burning.

Personality
Disciplined, uncompromising and increasingly fanatical, he came to see the Emperor as divine.
He was disciplined and focused, devoted to the Emperor and to Rogal Dorn. During the Heresy, he became increasingly convinced that the Emperor was divine, a belief at odds with Imperial doctrine. His fanaticism shaped the Black Templars.

Legacy
Sigismund's legacy is the Black Templars' eternal crusade and their refusal to settle into a fixed home world. They hold to the Codex only loosely and revere the Emperor with a zeal close to religion. Every Black Templars Emperor's Champion is chosen in his image, and his death against Abaddon made the Despoiler the Chapter's oldest enemy. He has become an archetype for zealotry in Warhammer fiction: his growing cold-hearted fanaticism during the Siege shows the price paid by those who become the Imperium's perfect weapons. Every Black Templars Emperor's Champion and every Chapter Crusade honours his example, and the Black Templars rank among the most zealous Chapters in the Imperium.
