Overview

Marneus Calgar is the Chapter Master of the Ultramarines and Lord Macragge. For centuries before Roboute Guilliman returned, he governed Ultramar as its regent. Across the Imperium he is held up as the model Codex Astartes commander: a strategist who reads a whole war at a glance, and who also has a reputation for standing in the most dangerous spot on the field himself.

He fights with the Gauntlets of Ultramar and, since becoming a Primaris Marine, wears the Armour of Heraclus, and his defence of Macragge against Hive Fleet Behemoth is one of the Imperium's great victories. During the Plague Wars he put down mutinies on Macragge, and he later commanded the Imperial forces on Vigilus against Orks, Genestealer Cults and the Black Legion, crossing the Rubicon Primaris during that war. Marneus Calgar, Lord Macragge, is Chapter Master of the Ultramarines and master of the realm of Ultramar. He is a careful strategist and a fierce personal warrior. His record includes the defence of Macragge against Hive Fleet Behemoth, holding the gate alone through a night and a day at the Siege of Zalathras, and killing an Eldar Avatar of Khaine in single combat at Orar's Sepulchre. In the Era Indomitus he crossed the Rubicon Primaris and serves at Guilliman's side.

Origins

Recent fiction reveals he was born Tacitan, a serf of the noble House Calgar on Nova Thulium, and trained alongside his friend Marneus, the house's heir. Their instructor Crixus turned out to be a Khornate cultist and killed the young noble. Tacitan survived, took his friend's name and identity, and went on to join the Ultramarines.

Key events

  1. Led the defence of Macragge against Hive Fleet Behemoth, using the planet's terrain against the swarm. He was nearly killed by the Swarmlord on Cold Steel Ridge.
  2. Held the gates of the hive city Zalathras alone against an Ork horde for a night and a day, by Chapter tradition.
  3. Survived an ambush by a Night Lords warband after his ship was crippled en route to the Darkhold war zone.
  4. Fought the daemon prince M'kar the Reborn. His failure to destroy M'kar permanently later let the Iron Warriors warsmith Honsou free the daemon to attack Ultramar.
  5. Faced Hive Fleet Kraken on Ichar IV, where he finally slew the Swarmlord.
  6. Defended Macragge when the Black Legion attacked during the 13th Black Crusade, shortly before Guilliman was resurrected. He then led the defence of Vigilus in the War of Beasts and crossed the Rubicon Primaris.

Battles & campaigns

  • Battle of Macragge: He led the defence of Ultramar's capital against Hive Fleet Behemoth and the breaching assault on the hive ship Behemoth Primus.
  • Siege of Zalathras: He held a gate alone against an Ork horde through a night and a day.
  • Orar's Sepulchre (888.M41): He killed an Eldar Avatar of Khaine in single combat.
  • Era Indomitus: He crossed the Rubicon Primaris and serves as one of Guilliman's most trusted commanders.

Personality

Calm, courteous and fearless. Calgar pairs a scholar's grasp of the Codex with a warrior's instinct for when to break its conventions. He is fiercely protective of Ultramar's citizens, and since Guilliman's return he has served his gene-father with open humility.

He has a dry, understated manner and avoids glory-seeking, letting his deeds speak for themselves. He respects the Codex as accumulated wisdom rather than dogma. His readiness to risk death for his warriors and citizens has earned him fierce loyalty, and his humility before Guilliman reflects a lifetime spent keeping a father's house in order.

Weapons & Vehicles

Signature Wargear & PanoplyClad in the Mark X Gravis Armour of Heraclus (or the ancient Terminator Armour of Antilochus), the Chapter Master of the Ultramarines crushes battle tanks and Greater Daemons with the twin Gauntlets of Ultramar, each housing a belt-fed master-crafted storm bolter.

Legacy

Calgar is the model of the Codex Astartes in action, a Chapter Master who is also a statesman. His defence of Macragge made the Ultramarines' victory over Behemoth a turning point, and his choice to become a Primaris Marine signalled to other Chapters that the old guard could embrace Guilliman's new order. The Codex Astartes traditions he guards, together with the scars of Macragge, have made him the model of a Chapter Master for much of the Imperium.

Contested & retconned lore

The Tacitan origin comes from recent fiction. Older sources simply described him as a noble son of House Calgar.
