Older than the Imperium, older than the Space Marine Legions, and born in the very moment that one primitive human first took up a stone or bone to murder his own brother in cold blood, Drach'nyen is not merely a Daemon weapon; it is the psychic echo of mankind's first act of fratricide made manifest in the Immaterium. Known in the whispered prophecies of the Warp as the 'End of Empires,' this terrifying entity was uniquely bound to the fate of humanity and its Master.
During the secret War Within the Webway beneath the Imperial Palace in the midst of the Horus Heresy, Drach'nyen manifested in realspace and slaughtered whole cohorts of the Legio Custodes, Silent Sisters and Mechanicum taghmata. Even when the Emperor of Mankind Himself strode into the Webway to confront the entity, Drach'nyen fought Him toe-to-toe and impaled the Master of Mankind before the Emperor forced the unkillable Daemon into the shape of a towering greatsword and drove it into the chest of His most trusted Custodian tribune, Ra Endymion, ordering him to flee deep into the Webway so the blade could never be used against humanity again.
Millennia later, on the eve of the First Black Crusade, Ezekyle Abaddon followed the crimson eye-visoredvisions of the Warp beneath the Tower of Silence on the Daemon World of Uralan. Guided through the subterranean labyrinth by a mysterious golden-clad figure, Abaddon claimed the screaming, shapeshifting sword in his bare gauntlet—sealing his ascension as Warmaster of Chaos Undivided.
Design, mechanism & battlefield effect
Because Drach'nyen is a sentient, primordial Warp entity bound into the form of a two-handed greatsword rather than a mechanical disruption blade, its physical appearance is never entirely static. Across its dark, jagged fuller, a chorus of anguished human faces writhes and shrieks in silent agony—the trapped souls of Emperors, Chapter Masters, Farseers and Warlords that the blade has devoured over ten thousand years of war.
When Abaddon swings Drach'nyen in his right hand—paired with the Talon of Horus on his left—the edge does not merely cut through physical matter; it slices open the skin between realspace and the Immaterium itself. Ceramite power armour, Terminator shields, auramite plate and ferrocrete fortifications part before it as if they were mist, because the blade momentarily phases through normal physical laws and replaces the matter along its arc with raw warp-stuff.
Worse still, the conscious malice of the Daemon within the sword actively hungers to drink the souls of those it wounds, guiding Abaddon's strikes toward the smallest chink in an enemy's guard and unleashing a torrent of mortal warp-fire when its wrath is roused.
Patterns, variants & doctrine
Drach'nyen is utterly singular in the cosmos, the crown jewel of all Daemon Weapons. However, its terrifying union of a bound Neverborn entity with a physical blade serves as the dark archetype for every lesser Daemon Weapon forged by the Warpsmiths and Sorcerers of the Traitor Legions—from the Screaming Blades of Chaos Lords to the blood-drinking axes of Khorne and the plague-bloated knives of Nurgle.
Only a will as indomitable as Abaddon the Despoiler's can hold Drach'nyen without being consumed by the entity inside; lesser warlords who dare to grasp a mighty Daemon Weapon frequently find their own minds enslaved or their bodies mutated into gibbering Chaos Spawn when the bound Daemon rebels.
