Lore & origins

Tactical Dreadnought Armour, better known as Terminator armour, is so rare and difficult to make that only the most experienced veterans may wear it. In a Codex Chapter that means the 1st Company. A Chapter's suits are relics, passed from hero to hero and kept by the Techmarines over centuries. Many date back to the Horus Heresy, when patterns such as the Cataphractii and Tartaros were used by the Legions.

The armour merges power armour principles with the heavy sealed suits worn by starship crews in dangerous places such as the casings of plasma reactors. It can shrug off almost any small-arms fire. Every suit carries the Crux Terminatus on its left shoulder. Tradition holds that each Crux contains a fragment of the armour the Emperor wore when he fought Horus aboard the Vengeful Spirit.

Tactical Dreadnought Armour, or Terminator armour, is the heaviest personal armour in the Imperium, reserved for the 1st Company or each Chapter's most honoured veterans. Each suit is ancient and venerated. The Crux Terminatus on the left shoulder is said to contain fragments of the armour the Emperor wore during His final duel with Horus aboard the Vengeful Spirit. Patterns include the Heresy-era Cataphractii and Tartaros, and the classic Indomitus. Terminators have been central to Space Hulk since 1989.

Appearance & wargear

Terminators are huge and slab-armoured, with the head sunk between shoulders and a thick torso plate. The classic loadout is a storm bolter and power fist. Assault Terminators instead carry paired lightning claws or a thunder hammer and storm shield. One warrior in a squad may carry a heavy flamer, an assault cannon or a cyclone missile launcher. Veterans sometimes wear honours and parchment seals on their plates.

Battlefield role & tactics

Terminators are shock troops. They often arrive by teleportation, appearing from a strike cruiser's teleportarium in the heart of the enemy line, or they ride in a Land Raider. They are slow but nearly unstoppable, and they excel in close quarters where nothing can outflank them.

Their most famous battlefield is the space hulk. These drifting wrecks of fused starships are infested with Genestealers, and only Terminators are well protected enough to clear them corridor by corridor.

They teleport into combat to break enemy strongholds, board space hulks and destroy priority targets. They are very tough and hit hard, but they are slow.

Field maintenance and biological recovery logs indicate that extended deployment without liturgical recalibration or bio-stasis rest degrades targeting and metabolic stability by less than 4% per solar week—far outperforming standard sector baselines—while post-engagement recovery teams prioritize the immediate extraction of their core wargear, neural/gene-seed components, or machine-spirit memory cores before enemy scavengers can exploit them.
