Lore & origins

Among the cruellest plagues brewed in Nurgle's Cauldron and spread by Typhus the Traveler is the Walking Pox. When the contagion claims a hive city or Imperial Guard regiment, the victims' organs liquefy and horn-like bone spurs erupt from their skulls, yet their souls are prevented from departing. Trapped helplessly behind their own rotting eyes while their facial muscles twist into a permanent rictus grin, Poxwalkers shamble in endless, groaning tides ahead of the Death Guard, biting and bludgeoning their former comrades to swell the horde.

Appearance & wargear

Bloated, corpse-pale mutants with a single blackened horn sprouting from the forehead, distended bellies bursting with tentacles and maggots, and rusted improvised weapons—wrenches, pipes, and trench clubs.

Battlefield role & tactics

Driven in shambling walls of infected flesh ahead of Plague Marine phalanxes, Poxwalkers absorb enemy gunfire and drag down survivors to rise as fresh Poxwalkers moments later.

Field Modifications, Sub-Faction Doctrines & Operational Idiosyncrasies

Within the strategic threat-indices of the Departmento Munitorum, the Ordo Xenos, and the high command savants of Death Guard, Poxwalkers are classified as a premier troops asset whose battlefield effectiveness stems from the tight integration of operator conditioning and specialized wargear. Blessed by Grandfather Nurgle's necrotic resilience and organized into the seven Plague Companies of Barbarus and the Plague Planet, Death Guard formations advance behind a suffocating miasma of destroyer-hive flies and phage-toxins. In active campaign theatres, Poxwalkers attack with infectious teeth, blackened forehead horns, and rusted improvised clubs and wrenches.

Veteran formations of Poxwalkers develop distinct sub-faction doctrines and field modifications over decades of continuous deployment. The horn growing from a Poxwalker's brow is a miniature chime-antenna that resonates with the Tallyband of Nurgle. Whether fighting in void-ship boarding actions, ash-waste tank duels, or ruined hive-city basilicas, experienced crews and squad leaders strip away parade-ground redundancies to maximize ammunition feed reliability, target-acquisition speed, and close-quarters survivability under extreme suppression.

Field maintenance and biological or machine-spirit recovery logs confirm that sustained combat exacts a heavy toll on both wargear and flesh, yet Poxwalkers maintain operational cohesion long after standard line units would collapse. Following every major engagement, recovery teams prioritize the immediate extraction of their core panoply, veterancy honors, and consecrated components so that the lineage and lethal institutional memory of the formation endure into the next warzone.

Heraldry, Battle-Damage & Community Artistry

Across the Warhammer 40,000 illustration, Golden Demon painting, and display-diorama community, Poxwalkers stand out as one of the most rewarding subjects in the Death Guard range. Artists and miniature painters focus intently on their signature visual hallmarks: weathered Death Guard green or Pre-Heresy pallid bone plate encrusted with typhus corrosion, turquoise copper verdigris, streaking rust grime, and glossy radioactive-green slime weeping from ruptured belly-plates. Combined with the distinct silhouette described in field sightings—Bloated, corpse-pale mutants with a single blackened horn sprouting from the forehead, distended bellies bursting with tentacles and maggots, and rusted improvised weapons—wrenches, pipes, and trench clubs—every model and canvas painting offers a rich interplay of texture between rigid armour plates, weathered cloth or chitin, and gleaming weapon assemblies.

When depicting Poxwalkers at the height of battle, community artists and painters push contrast through sponge-chipped battle damage, directional mud and ash pigments across the lower greaves or hull tracks, and vivid Object Source Lighting (OSL) cast by active lenses, energy coils, or muzzle flashes. Sub-faction heraldry, campaign badges, and trophy details allow hobbyists to anchor each miniature or illustration in a specific canonical warzone—celebrating both the grimdark complexity of the Forty-First Millennium and the craftsmanship of the community that brings Death Guard to life.
