The Guardsman is the most common soldier in the Imperium. Regiments are raised from millions of worlds through the planetary tithe. Each world gives a share of its fighting men and women, who are shipped off to war zones they may never have heard of and, in most cases, never return home. A Guard regiment usually keeps the character of its home world, so the Astra Militarum includes jungle fighters from Catachan, trench soldiers from Krieg, horsemen from Attila and the disciplined Shock Troops of Cadia.
The basic fighting unit is the Infantry Squad of ten troopers led by a sergeant. Individually they are fragile next to Space Marines or most xenos warriors. The Imperium's answer is numbers, discipline and firepower. Massed lasgun volleys, artillery support and the sheer weight of regiments are what win wars. Cadia's regiments were seen as the model infantry of the Guard, and many other worlds copy their uniform and kit.
Life in the Guard is hard. Troopers are watched by commissars and preachers, fed on rations, and are expected to die where they stand if ordered. Yet the Guard's heroes, from Yarrick at Armageddon to Gaunt's Tanith First, show what ordinary people can achieve with courage.
The Infantry Squad is the basic unit of the Astra Militarum: ten soldiers under a sergeant. Each Imperial world must tithe soldiers, and regiments are raised from a single world, from the disciplined Cadians to the jungle-fighting Catachans, the grim Death Korps of Krieg, the ice-world Valhallans, the parade-ground Mordians and the stealthy Tanith. Once raised, a regiment rarely returns home. Survivors are often settled on the worlds they conquer. Each Guardsman is drilled with the Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer and armed with a lasgun, nicknamed the 'flashlight'.
Appearance & wargear
Guardsmen wear flak armour over fatigues in the colours of their regiment, with helmets, webbing, rebreathers and bedrolls. Their standard weapon is the lasgun, a reliable rifle that runs on rechargeable power packs. A squad may carry a special weapon such as a flamer, grenade launcher or plasma gun, and a two-man heavy weapons team with a lascannon, autocannon, heavy bolter or mortar. Sergeants carry a laspistol and chainsword.

Battlefield role & tactics
Infantry squads hold ground, screen tanks and artillery and absorb enemy attacks. They are most effective in large numbers, firing massed volleys under the orders of an officer. Commanders often merge squads into larger blobs to keep them in the fight, while heavy weapons teams provide anti-tank and anti-infantry support.

Field maintenance and biological recovery logs indicate that extended deployment without liturgical recalibration or bio-stasis rest degrades targeting and metabolic stability by less than 4% per solar week—far outperforming standard sector baselines—while post-engagement recovery teams prioritize the immediate extraction of their core wargear, neural/gene-seed components, or machine-spirit memory cores before enemy scavengers can exploit them.
