The Baneblade is a super-heavy tank and one of the oldest Standard Template Construct designs known to the Imperium. It needs a crew of ten to operate fully, and it is often used as a command vehicle by Imperial Guard generals. Baneblades are rare. Each is a precious relic, and many have histories stretching back thousands of years.
Most Baneblades are built on Mars. The Tech-priests of the Red Planet consider the Mars pattern the pure form of the Machine God's design, and it galled them that other forge worlds produced their own patterns. That dispute contributed to the schisms between forge worlds at the end of the Great Crusade.
The chassis is very adaptable, and the Adeptus Mechanicus has built many variants on it, including the Shadowsword, Stormlord, Banehammer, Hellhammer and Stormsword.
The Baneblade is an STC design from the Dark Age of Technology. It is the iconic super-heavy tank of the Imperial Guard and is built only by Mars and a few forge worlds that hold the knowledge. Each one is a revered war machine with its own name, history and battle honours. Crews often serve on the same tank for decades. Variants include the Shadowsword, Stormlord, Stormsword, Hellhammer, Banehammer, Banesword and Doomhammer.
Appearance & wargear
The Baneblade is enormous, with huge tracks on each side of a towering hull. Its main turret carries a baneblade cannon and coaxial autocannon, and a hull-mounted demolisher cannon sits below. Side sponsons carry lascannons and twin heavy bolters. Many Baneblades are decorated with honour banners and the names of their crews.
The Baneblade is a hulking, multi-turreted giant. It mounts a main turret with a Baneblade cannon and coaxial autocannon, a hull demolisher cannon, a twin heavy bolter and sponsons with lascannons and heavy bolters. A crew of about ten operates it.

Battlefield role & tactics
The Baneblade is a moving fortress. It breaks enemy lines, anchors an army's heavy firepower and serves as a command post. Enemy armies often commit their best anti-tank weapons just to stop one.
It spearheads breakthroughs, demolishes fortifications and anchors defensive lines, and can take on enemy titans and super-heavies at a pinch. It is enormously tough but slow and expensive. Losing one is a disaster, so it needs infantry and tank escorts to keep enemy infantry and melta teams away.
Field Modifications, Sub-Faction Doctrines & Operational Idiosyncrasies
Within the strategic threat-indices of the Departmento Munitorum, the Ordo Xenos, and the high command savants of Astra Militarum, Baneblade are classified as a premier vehicles asset whose battlefield effectiveness stems from the tight integration of operator conditioning and specialized wargear. Governed by Departmento Munitorum siege tables, Commissariat summary discipline, and interlocking vox-net fire coordinates, Astra Militarum regiments offset human fragility with overlapping fields of las-fire, heavy ordnance, and unyielding trench grit. In active campaign theatres, The Baneblade is enormous, with huge tracks on each side of a towering hull. Its main turret carries a baneblade cannon and coaxial autocannon, and a hull-mounted demolisher cannon sits below.
Veteran formations of Baneblade develop distinct sub-faction doctrines and field modifications over decades of continuous deployment. Guy Haley's novel follows a single Baneblade crew on campaign and shows how much a crew depends on its ancient tank's machine spirit. Whether fighting in void-ship boarding actions, ash-waste tank duels, or ruined hive-city basilicas, experienced crews and squad leaders strip away parade-ground redundancies to maximize ammunition feed reliability, target-acquisition speed, and close-quarters survivability under extreme suppression.
Field maintenance and biological or machine-spirit recovery logs confirm that sustained combat exacts a heavy toll on both wargear and flesh, yet Baneblade maintain operational cohesion long after standard line units would collapse. Following every major engagement, recovery teams prioritize the immediate extraction of their core panoply, veterancy honors, and consecrated components so that the lineage and lethal institutional memory of the formation endure into the next warzone.
Heraldry, Battle-Damage & Community Artistry
Across the Warhammer 40,000 illustration, Golden Demon painting, and display-diorama community, Baneblade stand out as one of the most rewarding subjects in the Astra Militarum range. Artists and miniature painters focus intently on their signature visual hallmarks: mud-spattered Cadian olive flak-plate or Krieg trench-coat drab, stenciled white regimental numbers across chipped steel helmets and tank glacis plates, oil-stained tracks, and ruby-red las-fire highlights. Combined with the distinct silhouette described in field sightings—The Baneblade is enormous, with huge tracks on each side of a towering hull—every model and canvas painting offers a rich interplay of texture between rigid armour plates, weathered cloth or chitin, and gleaming weapon assemblies.
When depicting Baneblade at the height of battle, community artists and painters push contrast through sponge-chipped battle damage, directional mud and ash pigments across the lower greaves or hull tracks, and vivid Object Source Lighting (OSL) cast by active lenses, energy coils, or muzzle flashes. Sub-faction heraldry, campaign badges, and trophy details allow hobbyists to anchor each miniature or illustration in a specific canonical warzone—celebrating both the grimdark complexity of the Forty-First Millennium and the craftsmanship of the community that brings Astra Militarum to life.
