Overview

The Emperor's oldest confidant and most powerful human psyker, who ran the Imperium's administration while the Emperor and his sons waged the Great Crusade.

As the Sigillite, he presided over the Council of Terra and oversaw the Adeptus Terra's bureaucracy. During the Heresy, he gathered the Knights-Errant from loyal warriors of the traitor Legions and others, and he watched over the Emperor's secret Webway project. In the end he sat on the Golden Throne to hold back the daemonic invasion of the Webway, a duty that consumed him. Malcador the Sigillite was the Emperor's oldest and closest ally. He was the first Regent of Terra, founder of the Grey Knights' forerunners and creator of the Knights Errant. A psyker of enormous power, he worked behind the scenes as the Imperium's spymaster and administrator. He gave the final measure of his life to the Emperor during the Siege of Terra.

Origins

His early life is obscure; he allied with the Emperor before or during the Unification Wars and became his regent.

Very little is known of his life before the Unification Wars, and even his own accounts were deliberately vague. He was already old when he met the Emperor. His psychic power and political cunning made him invaluable, and he became the Emperor's closest human ally.

His past is deliberately hard to pin down. According to Jaghatai Khan, Horus claimed to have learned Malcador's original name: Brahm al-Khadour, a Perpetual like the Emperor, remembered as a cursed wanderer or the last and greatest technomage of Terra. His chambers held two treasures the Sigillites had saved from the Age of Strife, Leonardo's Mona Lisa and van Gogh's Sunflowers. To the dying astropath Sibel Niasta he once claimed that he and the Emperor had always intended to set the Primarchs against one another. He described that claim as a lie told for comfort. At Nikaea he delivered the Chaplain Edict that created the Legions' Chaplains to guard the Imperial Truth.

Key events

  1. Was one of the Emperor's oldest confidants, a powerful psyker whose origins predate the Unification Wars.
  2. Served as the Sigillite, First Lord of the Council of Terra, running the Imperium's administration while the Emperor led the Great Crusade.
  3. Gathered the Knights-Errant, the agents who formed a seed of the later Grey Knights and Inquisition.
  4. Took the Emperor's place on the Golden Throne to hold back the daemons in the Webway during the Siege of Terra.
  5. Was consumed by the strain, burning out his life to buy time for the Emperor.

The Heresy made him a spymaster. When Garro's Eisenstein brought word of the betrayal at Isstvan III, Garro, Iacton Qruze and Euphrati Keeler were held in a Silent Sisterhood fortress on Luna while their story was weighed. Malcador went to them himself, then gave Garro the task of finding seven others utterly loyal to the Emperor, under the Sigillite's own seal, which later became the symbol of the Inquisition. Working with Leman Russ, he planned the attempt on Horus at Molech, choosing Garviel Loken, recently recovered from madness, as one of the Knights-Errant. He sat in the council of Dorn, Sanguinius, Russ and the Khan, and quietly tried to persuade Russ to stay on Terra. Of the twelve candidates he presented to the Emperor before taking the Throne, eight were Astartes from both Loyalist and Traitor Legions.

Battles & campaigns

  • Unification of Terra: He served as one of the Emperor's earliest allies and statesmen during the Unification Wars.
  • Knights Errant: During the Heresy he recruited a secret order from loyalist warriors of all the Legions, including Garro and other figures later linked to the Grey Knights.
  • The Golden Throne: When the Emperor left to fight in the Webway, Malcador took his place on the Throne to hold the defences.

Personality

Patient, ruthless and manipulative in the Emperor's service; he is a quiet schemer rather than a warrior.

He was patient, wise and sometimes cruel, willing to use people as tools for the Emperor's vision. He was also deeply loyal and willing to sacrifice himself. His long life gave him a dry wit and a certain weariness with the follies of others.

Weapons & Vehicles

Legacy

Malcador laid the foundations of later institutions. His Knights-Errant prefigured the Inquisition's methods, and his work is closely tied to the origins of the Grey Knights. He gave his life on the Throne. He is remembered as both the Emperor's most loyal servant and a ruthless schemer, and few in the Imperium today know the full extent of what he did. The Grey Knights, the early roots of the Inquisition and the Imperium's long tradition of secret orders can all be traced back to Malcador's schemes.
