Overview

Commander Puretide was the greatest strategist in T'au history. His students included Farsight and Shadowsun, and after his death his knowledge was preserved in neurochips that shaped T'au military doctrine.

He commanded in many of the T'au Empire's earliest wars, and the techniques he developed remain central to the Fire Caste's way of war. His preserved knowledge has made him something of a legend among T'au warriors, a strategist whose ideas still guide commanders long after his death. Puretide was the greatest T'au strategist of his age. He taught Farsight, Shadowsun and many others, and his teachings shaped T'au warfare after his death. The Ethereals had his memories recorded so that his genius would never be lost. The result was the Puretide Engram Neurochip, and before that the prototype "Swords of Puretide" created during the Damocles Gulf Crusade.

Origins

He taught at Mount Kanji on Dal'yth. Each student developed a different style.

Puretide spent his career as one of the Fire Caste's foremost commanders before retiring to Mount Kanji on Dal'yth, where he taught a select few students. He refused to teach a single style, instead encouraging each pupil to develop their own. That philosophy is why Farsight and Shadowsun, his two most famous students, fight in such different ways.

Lexicanum, drawing on several codexes, places Puretide's life between 651 and 731.M41, during the Second Sphere of Expansion. His campaigns added large areas to the T'au Empire. The septs of Elsy'eir and Tash'var owe their existence to his victories. His use of long-range firepower and manoeuvre was said to make war joyless even for the Orks, who could never close to the brawl they wanted.

Key events

  1. Taught O'Shovah (Farsight) and O'Shaserra (Shadowsun) on Mount Kanji.
  2. Made Farsight's climb to Mount Kanji a test of tenacity.
  3. His strategic knowledge was recorded after his death.
  4. Prototype Swords of Puretide were implanted in commanders during the Damocles Gulf Crusade.
  5. These led to the Puretide Engram Neurochip, which overrides the user's own strategic knowledge.
  6. After the Damocles Gulf Crusade, the Puretide engrams were forcibly removed from those implanted with them, leaving them broken; Farsight's friend Commander Shas'vastos was hidden away in stasis before his removal and later saved when the Enclaves' scientist O'Vesa recalibrated his chip.

Imperial records of the Kronus campaign, from the Dawn of War: Soulstorm game and its T'au commander Shas'O Kais, credit him with breaking a greenskin assault in Kronus' southern jungles and killing great numbers of Orks. Even he could not clear the planet of them for good. Near the end of his career he was badly wounded by raiders while inspecting his troops. Unable to lead effectively, he withdrew to Mount Kan'ji on Dal'yth.

Battles & campaigns

  • Early T'au expansions: He won many campaigns in the Empire's early centuries.
  • Dal'yth: He trained his students in the mountains of Dal'yth.

Personality

Puretide was patient, meditative and wise. He taught by testing his students rather than instructing them directly.

He believed that understanding oneself was the first step to understanding war, and he saw each student's character as a weapon to be honed. His teaching methods were demanding, sometimes harsh, but always purposeful. His legacy shows that he valued wisdom over obedience.

On Mount Kan'ji he lived as a hermit, writing philosophy, developing doctrine and teaching a new generation. His treatise on war argues for a balanced, flexible and variable approach. Most of his students could master only one strand of it. The Ethereals put his greatest pupils into cryogenic stasis to be woken when needed. Lexicanum names them as O'Shovah (Farsight), O'Shaserra (Shadowsun) and O'Kais.

Weapons & Vehicles

Signature Wargear & PanoplyLegendary mentor to Shadowsun, Farsight and Kais, Commander Puretide perfected the Kauyon and Mont'ka tactical doctrines from the cockpit of a classic XV8 Crisis Battlesuit armed with a Plasma Rifle, Fusion Blaster, and the prototype neural engram chip that now bears his name.

Legacy

Puretide was the greatest Fire Caste commander of his generation, and the teacher of the T'au Empire's most famous warriors. His recorded strategic knowledge, implanted in the commanders who came after him, still shapes T'au warfare. His dual legacy, as teacher of both Farsight and Shadowsun and as an engram carried into battle by others, makes him the hidden thread linking the T'au Empire's greatest heroes and its greatest heretic. Puretide lives on as a chip, a teaching and a cautionary tale about the Greater Good's costs.

Before he died his mind was scanned and his memories placed in the Puretide Engram Neurochip. The Earth caste's first wartime attempt, the Swords of Puretide, was a disaster: when the chips were later removed, the implanted officers were left as drooling simpletons. One prototype carrier was kept in stasis until the Farsight Enclaves scientist O'Vesa recalibrated the chip decades later and woke the warrior safely. Even the hermit's ghost has shaped T'au politics.
